Dr. Fengwu Bai receivedhis BSc and MSc from the Dalian University of Technology, China, and PhD fromthe University of Waterloo, Canada. He is now working as a distinguishedprofessor at the School of Life Science and Biotechnology, Shanghai Jiao TongUniversity, China with research interests in biofuels, bioenergy and bio-basedchemicals from biomass resources. Based on his in-depth understanding of thetheoretical and economic constraints of immobilized cells with supportingmaterials for the production of bulk commodities, Prof. Bai developed theconcept of the self-immobilized cells through their self-flocculation withoutconsumption of any supporting materials, and established methodologies forstrain development, bioreactor configuration and process optimization, takingethanol fermentation with the brewing yeast Saccharomycescerevisiae as an example. To date, he has co-authored more than 200articles, and most of them were published in reputed international journals. Inaddition, He has contributed 4 chapters to well-acknowledged academic booksincluding Comprehensive Biotechnology published by Elsevier, and co-edited 2volumes for the Springer book series: Advances in BiochemicalEngineering and Biotechnology. He is presently the Chair of the Subcommittee onBiotechnology, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC),Executive Board Member of Asian Federation of Biotechnology (AFOB), Chair ofthe AFOB Division of Bioprocess and Bioseparation Engineering (BBE), and Editorof Biotechnology Advances (Elsevier)
